Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language film, directed by Anees Bazmee, written by Aakash Kaushik, and produced by both T-Series Films and Cine1 Studios. It is the third film of the title based franchise after Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022). The film features Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri and is based in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal.

The film was announced to be in production officially in March 2023. The production started in Mumbai, Kolkata, Orchha, and Leh between March and September 2024. It was shot under the lens of cinematographer Manu Anand. The film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Injury was released to the theatres on 1 st November 2024 coinciding with the celebration of Diwali day. It has so far grossed over ₹194 crores (US$23 million) worldwide within four days, making it the fifth highest-grossing Hindi language film of the year 2024.

Production: Casting of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3

Kartik Aaryan was announced to play the same character he played in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. On 12 February 2024, it was announced through the sharing a video on Instagram that Vidya Balan, who played the role of Manjulika in original Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) would be reprising the same character. On 21 February 2024, The project was announced to star Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri. Rajpal Yadav, who played the part of Chhota Pandit in the earlier films would be making a return to the film as well. The cast also includes Vijay Raaz, Rajesh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa, Sanjay Mishra, Ashwini Kalsekar etc.

Filming

On 9 March 2024, the cast and crew of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 assembled for a ‘muhurat puja’ in Mumbai as a part of the commencement of principal photography. It was producer Bhushan Kumar who clapped the muhurat shot for Kartik Aaryan. Few of the other attendees were actress Vidya Balan, Triptii Dimri, actor Rajesh Sharma and co-producer Shiv Chanana. On 11 March 2024, a glimpse video of this event was uploaded by T-Series with the name “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Begins”, The video also showed Aaryan taking the very first shot of the movie, which involved a train, shot by DOP Manu Anand. While in the midst of shooting, Bazmee faced considerable difficulty as he had injured his leg on the last day of the film’s recce. In defiance of the doctor’s orders, which included the insertion of a steel plate into his leg and remaining inactive for three months, he chose a less severe procedure that permitted him to meet his film obligations. He arrived on set in a wheelchair and resumed working on the film.There was a lot of pre-production that went into the film and many stages of planning and execution were carried on with the involvement of the core team members Bhushan Kumar, Bazmee, and Aaryan.

Shooting initiated in Mumbai, and the first schedule is expected to wind up by 27 March 2024. Inclined to this schedule, Aaryan’s entry sequence was also made. For this purpose, a huge set in a dome shape was constructed in Film City, Mumbai, for around a thousand background dancers, which was choreographed by Ganesh Acharya. After a hiatus, Bazmee too was on his way to recover from the injury and was already looking for the next scheduled locations in Kolkata. There was an arrival of the cast and crew in Kolkata on 8 April 2024, in order to start the second schedule. In this schedule, Aaryan rode a bullet motorcycle on Howrah Bridge, this time with Prantika Das and Arun Kushwah at Victoria Memorial. The shooting then continued at Mallick Ghat flower market where a small set of skeletons was erected. Before this, the production crew erected a sophisticated Bengali village set in Mumbai where some important scenes were shot. The song ‘Mere Dholna’ has been made as a jugalbandi of Madhuri and Vidya and it has been choreographed by Chinni Prakash.

For the film score Sandeep Shirodkar is the composer, and for the music Pritam, Tanishk Bagchi, Amaal Mallik, Sachet–Parampara, Lijo George–DJ Chetas and Aditya Rikhari are the composers. Lyrics are by Sameer Anjaan, Rashmi Virag, Aditya Rikhari, Dhrruv Yogi, Som and Pitbull. The Title Track and Ami Je Tomar song which was composed by Pritam will be recreated for the second time after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2.The initial single titled, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (Title Track) was made available on 16th October, 2024. The album was available for streaming on all music platforms on 23rd October, 2024.

Release: Theatrical

The movie was released in theatres on 1st November 2024 where it coincided with the Diwali festival. AA Films acquired the worldwide theatrical distribution rights. Distributor Anil Thadani had acquired the rights of single screens for the said film. The release surprisingly coincided with the film Singham Again.  Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 , The movie has faced prohibition in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia because of the references of homosexuality which is illegal in the country.

Reception: Critical reception

According to Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, only 55% of 11 critics are positive with an average rating of 6.6/10. Bollywood Hungama criticised the movie and rated it 4.5 stars out of 5 and said “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is an entertaining horror comedy that works on the back of its performances, a tight script, creative direction, and most importantly, an unpredictable ending.” Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com rated the movie 3/5 stars and said, “In Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, a delightfully over-the-top Madhuri and Vidya exchange lethal glares and wicked chuckles in a fierce fit of glamour.” Two and a half out of five stars were given to Renuka Vyavahare of The Times of India and she stated, “The film is brashly entertaining, outrageous, and has its moments of ridiculous humour that will cause belly laughs.”

Box office performance

On its opening day, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 collected ₹36.60 crores and netted a total of ₹110.20 crores on the first weekend in India. As of 4th November 2024, the film managed to earn a net of ₹152.38 crores in India and through the rest of the world collected ₹194.87 crores globally.

Summary: 

Ruhaan “Rooh Baba” Randhawa takes pleasure in conning people and posing as a ghostbuster. While Ruhaan has always enjoyed entertaining his friends with made-up skits, things go sideways when Meera’s uncle recruits him to deal with Meera, who is allegedly possessed by a ghost.  Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 ,Meera appears and Ruhaan gets scared thinking that he has seen a ghost, and the actual one. When he turns up, however, everybody is stunned to see him as he is the living reincarnation of a prince called Rajkumar Debendranath who lived two hundred years ago. The current members of the family reside in the stables since the spirit of Manjulika haunts the palace. 

The Rajpurohit cautions all against the entering of the room of Manjulika, a particular ghost, suggesting it be opened on Durgashtami when a member of the raj family who has been born to banish the ghost does so.  Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 ,Convinced that Ruhaan is indeed the spirit that once dwelt in Debendranath, everyone returns back to the palace. As per one of the local stories, 200 years back Manjulika was a princess. She bore a child for King Debendranath, who was a servant. When the King named Debendranath as his successor, she killed him out of jealousy. To avenge, the King set Manjulika ablaze, and her angry spirit remained in the palace claiming lives.
